To the editor:
We have had our first cold snap of the season reminding us what is ahead. While we are able to open the closet and pull out a warm jacket, for many children in Cumberland and Perry counties that is not an option.
Each year, from October through December, the Carlisle Kiwanis Club operates a program called “Warm The Children.” It’s a program whose mission is to provide new warm winter clothing for children of needy families. It operates through the local newspaper (The Sentinel) and a local charitable organization (Carlisle Kiwanis Club). Every penny donated through newspaper advertising is used to send families shopping with a local volunteer shopper at our K-Mart and Walmart stores. Each child receives $80 worth of new warm clothing.
To date, 297 children have gone shopping with 284 children on the waiting list. More referrals are arriving each day. There are more than 24 agencies in Cumberland and Perry counties who refer these children. Last year your generous donations enabled us to send over 700 children shopping.
The 284 plus children on the waiting list need your help. Please send a generous gift today to Warm The Children, PO Box 862, Carlisle, PA 17013. Make checks payable to Warm The Children. All gifts are tax-deductible.
If you would consider being a volunteer shopper, please contact Carol Lorence at firstname.lastname@example.org or Sharon Fahnestock at email@example.com. You will find this to be a humbling and rewarding experience.
Thank you from the children, Carlisle Kiwanis Club and The Sentinel.
