WEST SUNBURY, Pa. (AP) — State police say the driver a car is dead and his passenger in critical condition after his vehicle crossed the center line of a rural western Pennsylvania highway and collided with a garbage hauling truck.

State troopers from the Butler barracks say the accident happened about 4:45 a.m. Monday on Route 308 in Clay Township, near West Sunbury. That's about 45 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Police say 23-year-old Nicholas Spisak, of West Sunbury, was trapped in his 1994 Chevrolet Camaro which wrapped around a tree after it collided with the truck, whose driver tried to avoid the oncoming car.

Troopers say Spisak's passenger, 18-year-old Maloney BirckBicher, of Hilliards, has been flown to a Pittsburgh hospital in critical condition. They say she was thrown from the wreckage.

The truck driver isn't hurt.
