The American Red Cross has issued another plea for blood donors as winter weather this season continues to interrupt blood drives, reducing the organization’s supply.
So far this year, severe winter weather has caused 600 blood drives to cancel, according to the Red Cross, which equated that to 17,500 donations of blood and platelets going uncollected.
It also said that widespread flu has also resulted in lower turnout at blood drives that managed to be held as planned.
There are a few area blood drives the American Red Cross has planned in the coming months.
In Cumberland County, blood drives will be held from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at Mt. Olivet Church, 5000 Simpson Ferry Road, Mechanicsburg; 1:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at Newburg-Hopewell Volunteer Fire Co., 121 Lovers Lane, Newburg; and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at Pennoi Associates Inc., 1215 Manor Drive, Suite 100, Mechanicsburg.
