CARLISLE — Wegmans has told The Sentinel that rumors it was interested in The Point at Carlisle Plaza property have no basis in fact.
“There was no truth to the rumor that we were considering the property,” said Jo Natale, spokeswoman for Wegmans. “That was a false rumor.”
Wegmans competitor Giant purchased the shopping mall, The Sentinel reported Wednesday night. Giant has not said what it plans to do with the plaza.
Some in the community had speculated Giant bought The Point to thwart Wegmans.
Wegmans operates a Mechanicsburg store on the Carlisle Pike. While it owns clusters of stores in upstate New York, where it is based, the grocer has in recent years adopted a strategy of, in most cases, building only one store withing a 20- or 30-mile radius.
Operating stores in Mechanicsburg and Carlisle would be inconsistent with Wegmans' strategy.
