The United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County Monday kicked off its Gifts that Give program, which allows area children to choose a gift for their parents for the holidays.

Students and members of the Women Leadership Council were on hand Monday evening to drop off their gifts to start the event and work on boxes that companies and churches can use to collect gifts for the program.

Gifts that Give aims to help local homeless children and very low-income children still provide a gift for the ones they love.

Last year, more than 170 children were able to do “free shopping” as part of this event to choose a gift for a mother and/or father. This year, United Way said it anticipates that more than 400 gifts are needed for the event.

The 2012 Gifts that Give event will be held on Dec. 8.

Gifts or cash donations to purchase gifts are needed. Gifts are being accepted at the United Way office at 145 S. Hanover St., in Carlisle between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. starting today. Cash donations are also being accepted.
