A group of 30 missionaries from five area churches completed a one-week construction mission trip on Tangier Island in Virginia, in mid-June.

The 1-square-mild island is located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay and only accessible by ship or small aircraft. The missionary group has visited the island before to complete post-Hurricane Sandy work and help with home repairs, which are expensive for residents of the island.

The construction work included decking, roofing, ramps for those with disabilities, plumbing, painting and carpentry, but the group also visited shut-in elderly residents.

The local group consisted of about 30 people, ages 10 to 70, who traveled by bus and ship to get to the island. The team consisted of members from Carlisle Evangelical Free Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Otterbein United Methodist Church, Carlisle Community Christian Fellowship Church and Susquehanna Valley Evangelical Free Church.

The team plans to return to Tangier Island next summer. Anyone interested in joining the team can contact Carlisle E-Free Church Missions Ministry, which has supported the trip for three years.
