As Veterans Day approaches on Nov. 11, two groups in Carlisle will honor veterans by participating in the Wreaths Across America project.
Dog Scout Troop 161 of Carlisle began its involvement with this program in 2012. The money raised by the troop is donated to Susquehanna Service Dogs with the designation that the funds be used to train a dog for a veteran. With the help of donors, the Dog Scouts have raised more than $1,000 for SSD.
In 2014, the Friends of the Bosler Memorial Library became involved in order to honor veterans and support the library. For each wreath sponsored at $15, the participating nonprofit group receives $5.
Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2007 to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. That year, he and his company, Worcester Wreath Co., donated the first 5,000 wreaths and laid them on veterans’ graves in Arlington National Cemetery.
WAA’s mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach future generations about the cost of freedom. This is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies at Arlington, as well as national cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond.
Since its inception, the organization has expanded to include over 2,500 local fundraising groups in all 50 states representing more than 1,100 cemeteries, military memorials and other locations, along with Arlington. Since 2008, Congress has issued a proclamation officially recognizing national “Wreaths Across America Day” each December. This year’s ceremonies will be held on Dec. 17.
Both Dog Scout Troop 161 and the Friends of the Bosler Memorial Library will be helping to lay wreaths at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville on Dec. 17. The remembrance ceremony begins at noon. All are welcome to attend and help lay wreaths.
You can sponsor a wreath locally in one of two ways: online or by check or cash. To donate online go to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org and click on “Donate.” Next click on “Sponsor a wreath with a local fundraising Group” In the “Search” box type in PA0026P for the Dog Scouts or PA0077P for the Friends of the Bosler Library. This will ensure that the wreath will be sent to Indiantown Gap National Cemetery and the group of your choice receives its share.
Sponsorships by check or cash must be accompanied by the Wreath Sponsorship Form.
