This week’s Tour Through Time provides a look at Mary Himes Vale, her dog Puck, and two female friends that took a two-day hike on the Appalachian Trail on Aug., 28-29 in 1939.

The hike was 37½ miles. They started in the Mount Holly Springs area and ended above Marysville overlooking the Susquehanna River. They hiked 20 miles day one and 17½ miles the following day.

Tour Through Time will run Saturdays in The Sentinel as a joint project with the Cumberland County Historical Society.

Sentinel photographer Michael Bupp will work with staff at the Historical Society each week to offer a look at Carlisle and the surrounding area through the years.
