State Police at Carlisle say they have received various reports of a phone scam in which people are calling older individuals and pretending to be employees of a computer technical support team.

Police said the callers state there is an issue with the home computer and instructs the resident to download a program called “Team Speak,” which gives them remote access and complete control over the computer.

The caller then shows the resident a fake computer screen that appears to show a large amount of money being deposited into the victim’s bank account. The caller said this was done as an error and requests repayment in the form of gift cards or money orders.

Once the payment is received, the caller changes the computer screen to appear as though the bank account has been balanced, according to police.

Police said this is a known scam, and residents should not provide any personal information or payment to these people.
