Police: Man shoots self while cleaning gun

An Illinois man was injured after police say he accidentally shot himself in the thigh in Dauphin County on Monday.

According to state police Public Information Officer Robert Hicks, the incident occurred at a home in the 2700 block of Sand Beach Road, East Hanover Township, at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

A trooper arrived at a residence for a call of a man who accidentally shot himself in the left thigh. The man, a 24-year-old from Illinois, who is in town visiting a friend, was attempting to clean his friend’s Smith and Wesson M&P pistol when it accidentally discharged and the bullet struck him in the left thigh, police said.

The man was taken to Hershey Medical via South Central EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. The friend was not at home when this incident occurred, police said.
