Several old artillery shells were found this morning at about 11 a.m. in a wooded area west of Perry Manor Apartments in Oliver Township, Perry County, according to state police at Newport.
Police said several residents were evacuated from the area for safety reason and a state police Hazardous Device and Explosive Sections team responded to the scene.
The HDES team determined the shells no longer contained explosives and may have been used for training by the military, police say.
The shells were removed from the scene and turned over to the Army, according to reports. All residents safely returned to their homes around 1 p.m., police said.
State police were assisted at the scene by the Newport Fire Department, Newport Police Department and the New Bloomfield EMS.
