Fire crews responded to a fire at Fry Communications in Mechanicsburg around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday after an explosion was reported in a gas-fired dryer.

The building, located on Pleasant View Drive in Silver Spring Township, just outside the borough limits of Mechanicsburg, was evacuated after the initial explosion and no one was reported hurt.

The dryer is two stories high and 150 feet long by 15 feet wide and is used to dry ink at the printing facility.

It took crews about 90 minutes to get the fire under control. Firefighters told abc27 they had to deal with zero visibility because of the smoke. The fire was isolated to one corner of the large plant.

Chief Gary Neff of Washington Fire Co. told PennLive.com that the estimated damage could be $750,000, but said it could easily be in the millions.

Neff estimated as many as 100 other employees were working elsewhere in the expansive printing facility, which is about 300 yards long. "They did a nice job shutting down and getting everyone out," said the chief.
