Planning is underway for the 2018 Carlisle Memorial Day commemoration.
Kirk Wilson, president of the Carlisle Joint Veterans Council, which organizes the event, said the parade and memorial service will be held Monday, May 28. The parade in downtown Carlisle will begin at 9 a.m. The ceremony will begin at the conclusion of the parade about 9:45 a.m.
“Memorial Day is the one time authorized by Congress to remember the eternal sacrifice made by the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces,” Wilson said. “Carlisle and its citizens have played a unique role in the founding and the defense of this country. It is only proper that we take time to recognize and remember those who gave their last full measure of devotion.”
Wilson said there is still time to register for the parade. The council is looking for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, Brownies and Girl Scouts, marching groups with a patriotic theme, and civic and fraternal organizations willing to participate with a Memorial Day theme.
Registration and questions can be directed to Rick Olson, commander of Cpl. Orlando Newcomer VFW Post 477 in Carlisle, at RickOlson@CarlisleVFW.com.
