ALBANY, N.Y. — State police have confirmed that the victim of a fatal truck accident on the New York State Thruway was the driver of the rig.

Troopers say 45-year-old Jeffrey Schertzer, of Lemoyne, Pa., was operating a Volvo tractor-trailer hauling two tandem trailers and traveling southbound on the highway.

Schertzer pulled the truck over to the right shoulder just past the Exit 23 interchange and exited the vehicle shortly after 3 a.m. Friday. The truck then rolled forward over Schertzer, who was killed by the impact. The rig continued a short distance before crashing into the center barrier, leaving both trailers blocking the southbound lanes.

The accident scene has been cleared and all lanes are now open to traffic.
