South Middleton Township will host a senior expo and health fair for senior citizens and residents with special needs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The expo will be held at the South Middleton Township Public Works Building located at 520 Park Drive in South Middleton Township and will include a host of free medical screenings and services.
“First and foremost, we have so many health-oriented activities,” South Middleton Township Supervisor Tom Faley said. “It helps ensure a better health for our residents. It is a try to improve their quality of life.”
UPMC will provide free glucose and cholestoral screenings. Hearing tests will be provided by Brown Optical and Hearing Aid Service. Stoken Ophthalmology will be on hand to provide vision screens and Cumberland Goodwill EMS and Yellow Breeches EMS will do blood pressure tests.
“When we have them exposed (to the health professionals) they naturally use their services,” he said. “In doing so, we improve the posture of the seniors from a health perspective.”
Attendees can also receive a shingles and flu vaccination. Insurance or Medicare cards are required for both, and anyone interested in the shingles vaccination must pre-register with K-Mart Pharmacy by calling 717-243-2271.
Other activities at the expo include the Cumberland County Sherriff’s Department providing senior ID cards, coupons from KARNS and a place to recycle compact florescent light bulbs.
Bingo will begin at 2:45 p.m.
Faley said the expos has grown from 87 seniors the first year in 2001 to more than 320 last year.
“The manager at that time got input from residents that they wished the township would did more for seniors,” Faley said. “Out of that recommendation she developed — in 2001 — our first senior health fair.”
The event is open to the public. The free screenings and activities are available to all who attend, as quantities permit.
