Jennifer Nez Denetdale, a citizen of the Navajo Nation, will present "The Diné/Navajo Long Walk: War, Remembrance and Hope" at Dickinson College at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 7 in Althouse 106 located between North College and West Louther streets. This event is free and open to the public.
Originally from Tohatchi, New Mexico, Denetdale is an associate professor of American studies at the University of New Mexico and author of "Reclaiming Diné History: The Legacies of Chief Manuelito and Juanita" and two Navajo histories for young adults.
The lecture will examine the ways in which the Diné remember the experiences of their ancestors in the mid-19th century during the period when the United States claimed the Southwest. The stories of the forced march to the Bosque Redondo reservation remain vivid in the collective Diné memory and today are used to convey messages about traditional values, according to a press release from the college.
Denetdale is the first Diné to be awarded a doctorate in history, which she received in 1999 from Northern Arizona University. In 2010, she was guest curator for the exhibit "Hastiin Ch'ilhajíní d-- Diné bi Naat'áanii Bahane': Chief Manuelito and Navajo Leaders," now showing at the Navajo Nation Museum. Her research interests have included the uses of oral tradition to create Diné histories and examinations of Navajo Long Walk stories and memory. She is currently working on a history of Diné women.
Beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 11, there will be ‘Art on the Farm,' a collaboration between Carlisle Arts Learning Center and Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture to celebrate local farm-fresh art and food.
There will be art, appetizers, an auction and aperitifs. Tickets are $50. For tickets, or for more information, call CALC at 249-6973.
Carlisle
In celebration of the Ford Nationals Parade and Street Party, the Carlisle Theatre will be showing the classic movie "Bullitt" starring Steve McQueen at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 4.
The 1968 Academy Award-winning film starred Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Vaughn alongside McQueen and is probably best remembers for its car chase scene through the streets of San Francisco, a scene some movie critics believe is the most influential such scene in cinematic history.
Bullitt drove a 1968 Highland Green Mustang GT 390 CID Fastback.
Friday night will mark the first Friday of the month, and this month's theme is Broadway on South Hanover, sponsored by Orrstown Bank, from 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Carlisle.
State government
State Sen. Pat Vance, R-31, announced that more than $136,000 in Recycling Performance Grants recently were awarded to four local government agencies.
Cumberland County received $1,720 for 331 tons recycled; Hampden Township received $118,990 for 6,264 tons recycled; the Borough of Lemoyne received $13,105 for 648 tons recycled; and the Borough of Wormleysburg received $2,555 for 185 tons recycled.
The grant is based on tons recycled and the municipality's population for the calendar year 2009.
"Participation in recycling by Cumberland County residents remains strong. This is a testament to their commitment to reduce landfill waste and reuse materials. I encourage residents to continue their efforts," Vance said in a press release.
Vance also issued a press release about the new Visitors and Education Center at the Army Heritage and Education Center in Middlesex Township.
The $12.5-million, 37,000-square-foot phase one of the center opened in May and is a focal point for educational activities.
The 7,000-square-foot exhibit and interpretive gallery area in the center currently houses the facility's new Civil War exhibit called, "A Great Civil War: 1861, the Union Dissolved.'
"The center, which is a public-private partnership, stands as a testament to the importance of chronicling the work of those served in the United States Army throughout history," Vance said in a press release.
"It is important to not forget the events and service of our veterans. In addition, I encourage everyone to visit the Pennsylvania Civil War 150 Road Show, which will be traveling to all 67 counties through 2014," she said in the release.
