Penn State Master Gardeners in Cumberland County will hold a free “Compost-Ability” workshop 9:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Cumberland County Extension office, 310 Allen Road, Carlisle. The workshop will cover topics like how to get started composting kitchen scraps and yard trimmings and turning autumn leaves into “black gold.”

Although there will not be compost bins available at this event for distribution or sale, you can learn how to construct your own bin using inexpensive materials. If you missed the opportunity to receive a free bin through the DEP’s Backyard Composting program, you can still learn the skills to start composting at home. Penn State Master Gardeners will also show you how to set up an indoor worm composting bin.

There is no fee to attend, but class size is limited and pre-registration is requested by Oct. 15.

For more information, or to register, please call 240-6500 or visit http://cumberland.extension.psu.edu. Click on Horticulture/Gardening and then go to Upcoming Events to download a Compost-Ability brochure.
