Harry Martin “Marty” Mitchell
July 20, 1929—January 08, 2018
Harry Martin “Marty” Mitchell died peacefully at home in his sleep on January 8, 2018. He was 88. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on July 20, 1929, Marty was the son of Harry E. Mitchell, a Harrisburg Police Lieutenant, and Mary Martin Mitchell. He was the beloved younger brother of two sisters, Gladys Simpson and Janet Beyer (both deceased) and is survived by a younger brother, Donald A. Mitchell, a resident of Elkhart, Indiana.
Marty was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and served his country for 27 years both as a midshipman and as an Air Force officer. He was particularly proud of his service in Vietnam.
Marty married his beloved Jean (née Bohn) in 1952 and remained married until her death in 2001. He was the father of four and he is survived by children, David and his wife Marion, Ellen and wife Lisa, and William and wife Heather. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Ian and Danielle.
Marty was a kind and generous man, beloved by his family and both liked and respected by all who knew him. He brought light into the lives of those he met, and his kindness and generosity of spirit will be missed.
A memorial service will be held in Shippensburg, followed by an interment of ashes in Harrisburg Pennsylvania at a date to be determined. In place of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Wounded Warriors of Pennsylvania.
