Harold “Smitty” Ronald Smith, 84, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 in Harrisburg Hospital. He was born on March 25, 1933 in Wiconisco, Dauphin County, and was the son of the late Harold Henry Smith and Edna V. (Messner) Smith.
Harold graduated from John Harris High School, Harrisburg with the class of 1951. He was a U. S. Navy veteran and served during the Korean War. Harold owned and operated the former Cumberland Office Equipment Co. in Carlisle for over 40 years. He was currently the oldest member and a Past President of the Carlisle Lions Club, a member of the Tumbling Run Game Preserve, a Past President of the Carlisle Parks and Recreation Board and a former board member of the Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home. Harold loved Penn State, the Washington Redskins, the Phillies, hunting, golfing, Carlisle Little League and the Carlisle Swim Club.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Phyllis J. (Spittler) Smith, three daughters; Kristi Clark of Mechanicsburg, Melinda (husband, Ray) Chance of Trenton, NJ and Amy (husband, Richard) Baish of Carlisle, one son, Matthew Harold (wife, Joyce) Smith of Mechanicsburg, grandchildren; Hunter, Hank, Pip and Maggie Smith, Joshua (wife, Erica) Clark, Jordan (wife, Sophie) McClain, Bethany and Robert Chance, Riley Smith, Janelle (husband, Dan) Makowski and Krystal (husband, Alex) Holbert, great-grandchildren; Audrey and Everett Makowski and a very special cousin, Bob (wife, Sandy) Knawby of Mechanicsburg. Harold was preceded in death by a beloved son, Mark Ronald Smith.
A viewing will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, 2017 followed by funeral services at 4:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor Scott Hover officiating. Private burial with military honors will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
