HS Swimming Previews: Mechanicsburg's Brandon Maxwell

Mechanicsburg’s Brandon Maxwell brings some postseason experience back to the Wildcats after competing in the Mid-Penn Championships last year.

Cedar Cliff Colts

Last year: 4-6 (4-3)

Postseason: 29th in District 3 Class 3A Championships.

Opener: Tuesday vs. Bishop McDevitt, 4:15

Breakdown: The Colts have a single-digit roster, which makes for a challenging dual-meet season, but Cedar Cliff does return some experience. Junior Tucker Ball was the Colts’ lone district qualifier last season, making the cut in the 100 fly and the 100 back. He had top-10 finishes in both events at the Mid-Penn Championships.

Mechanicsburg Wildcats

Coach: Mike Glumac

Classification: 3A

Last year: 6-6 (4-3)

Postseason: did not qualify

Key returners: Jonathan Tucker, jr.; Joe Kovach, sr.; Brandon Maxwell, sr.; Sam Orner, jr.; Mason Duncan, jr.; James Wetherhold, soph.

Opener: Monday at Red Land, 4:15

Breakdown: Graduation cost the Wildcats their lone district qualifier from a year ago, Jimmy Karagiannis (50 free, 100 free). Seniors Brandon Maxwell and Joey Kovach bring some versatility, having competed in multiple strokes and relay squads at last year’s Mid-Penn Championships.

Red Land Patriots

Coach: Chris Sherbo

Classification: 3A

Last year: 3-10 (2-5)

Postseason: Tied 24th in District 3 Class 3A Championships.

Key returners: Michael Ciavarella, jr.; Nicholas Anderson, soph.

Opener: Monday vs. Cedar Cliff, 4:15

Breakdown: The Patriots don’t have big numbers, with four of the 10 swimmers on the roster being freshmen. Junior Mike Ciavarella is the lone returning District 3 qualifier on the boys side, having qualified in the 100 free last season. He was also a top-20 finisher in the 100 fly at the Mid-Penn Championships.
