The Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation (CAEDC) has announced a $71,000 grant to the Cumberland Valley Rails-to-Trails Council (CVRTC) for the development of a boxcar museum in Shippensburg.
The grant from CAEDC, a county-sponsored development agency, will help the CVRTC to open a museum in the historic 1956 Penn Central boxcar located at the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail property on Fort Street.
“We are delighted to have been selected,” Garret Stahlman, CVRTC president, said in a release. “The generous funding from CAEDC will allow for the continued expansion of our Shippensburg Station project currently underway.”
The grant, which requires a 25 percent local match, will help to fund several upgrades to the Fort Street trailhead site, including an upgraded parking lot, decking linking the trail to the historic boxcar, and renovation of the boxcar into a museum space.
When completed in summer 2018, the Cumberland Valley Railroad Museum will be open year-round for self-guided tours.
“The Cumberland Valley Rail Trail is already an important tourism and recreation asset for the Cumberland Valley,” said Valerie Copenhaver, CAEDC Senior Director of Marketing & Tourism. “The creation of the railroad museum at Shippensburg Station will provide a signature destination, offering tourists and local residents an authentic experience of our region’s heritage.”
CAEDC’s Tourism Product Development Grant operates on a rolling application basis. For more information, contact Copenhaver at 717-240-7193 or email@example.com.
