Fire destroys Mt. Holly Springs home
Edie Weivley couldn’t believe that everything could be gone so quickly.
Her nephew Dustin Maurice was going to start his first year in high school. His brother Jesse had just finished and had begun to start his new life with a new car.
But one fire at her brother’s mobile home in Mt. Holly Springs early Thursday morning took away everything.
There was no new clothes for Dustin to wear on his first day of school. Jesse’s car was damaged before he had a chance to fully insure it.
Twenty years of belongings were gone in an instant when one fire claimed their home and everything inside of it early Thursday morning.
“It’s just been a really rough,” Weivley said. “After 20 years, everything is gone.”
Call
Greg Bretzman, assistant fire chief of Dickinson Township, said several local fire companies responded to the fire on the 800 block of Sand Bank Road at 2:11 a.m. and were there until about 4:30 a.m.
“It was a total loss,” Bretzman said. An electrical problem may have sparked the blaze, he said, but they won’t know for sure until the fire marshal makes a determination.
“Smoke detectors did wake up the one son,” Bretzman said, stressing that the importance of smoke detectors cannot be overstated. The teen actually crawled out a bedroom window and went around the house to make sure everyone got out safely, Bretzman said.
“We can’t advertise it enough: If a resident doesn’t have a smoke detector, please contact a local fire department,” Bretzman said.
Both teens made it out, Weivley said, and their parents, Duane and Paula Maurice were not home at the time, with one coming back from work and the other one going to work. The Red Cross helped the family right after the fire, but it’s Weivley, who lives in Carlisle, whose providing shelter for the family at the moment.
Weivley and other family members opened up a Maurice fire donation fund at the Member’s First Bank on Walnut Bottom Road for anyone wishing to donate to the family.
